About the book
Ten English murder trials, from 1752 to 1915, each told from its own trial transcript.
A doctor comes downstairs in a house in Henley-on-Thames on an August morning in 1751, and one of Mary Blandy's maids puts a piece of charred paper into his hands.
It has been in the kitchen fire and there are holes burned through it, but not a letter of the writing on the outside is lost. It reads: the powder to clean the pebbles with.
Upstairs, her father has three days to live.
